Healthy Snacks ~ easy food!
written by Candee Stark
Of all of the healthy snacks you can choose from, dried plums are by far
your best choice! I know some of you may turn your nose up to them but I absolutely love
them. The package calls them dried plums but I have always called them prunes.
To me they are a sweet treat that taste better than candy.
Finding healthy snacks that will satisfy you and not cause you to go off
your eating program can be a challenge sometimes~on the
Weight Watcher's plan, 7 dried plums count as 1 point.
Tonight I had some and as I was eating them I starting reading the container....they
truly are an amazing food!
Dried Plums contain:
~ Soluble and insoluble fiber. Soluble Fiber may reduce the risk of heart
disease, certain cancers, and may lower blood cholesterol levels.
Insoluble fiber is needed to help keep your digestive system healthy.
~Beta Carotene(good source of vitamin A): is essential for vision,
reproduction, growth, and a healthy immune system. Beta Carotene is an
antioxidant.
Researchers believe that antioxidants slow down the aging process and the US
Department of Agriculture ranked prunes as an antioxidant “powerhouse”,
outranking all other fruits and vegetables.
~Potassium: an important mineral that that helps control normal blood pressure. It
also transmits nerve impulses and controls muscle contractions.
Dried Plums/prunes are also low in sodium and have no fat and cholesterol.
Dried Plums/prunes are a healthy snack for anytime you are craving something
sweet. Grab a handful when you are on the go and they taste great on cereal too!
Did you know that California is the world's largest producer of dried plums,
growing 99% of the U.S. supply and 70% of the world’s supply.

Brown Fat Theory Provides Potential Weight Loss Breakthrough
|
released: 01/25/2012 |
|
New research supports a brown fat theory that may provide scientists with a weight loss breakthrough. In mice, brown fat is tissue that burns large amounts of fat and creates significant weight loss. Until recently, scientists didn't know if adult humans carry this fat or if it behaves the same way in human bodies that it does in mice. But a small study published this month in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, provides new evidence that it does.
Brown adipose tissue, or BAT, is literally fat that is brown in color. The tissue has more mitochondria that standard white fat which gives it a darker color. Mitochondria are the energy production centers in the body. Unlike white fat, the mitochondria in brown fat uses fat for energy and burns larger quantities of it than other tissue.
Brown Fat Theory in Humans and Mice
In mice, studies have shown that an increase in brown fat created significant weight loss because the tissue burned substantially more fat and calories. Two things created an increase of brown fat in mice: exercise and exposure to cold air. ...Read Full Post
