Great Alternative to the HJ-112, September 10, 2009

I've been a real advocate of the Omrom HJ-112 for years. Absolutely loved my old HJ-112... Unfortunately I got careless and accidently left it clipped to my pants and ran them through the washing machine... So I decided to get a new pedometer. I was intrigued by this new model and decided to give it a try. I really like it. It has some improvements over the HJ-112 and it's less expensive to boot! Briefly here are the differences: 1) It's smaller in circumference, but slightly thicker. 2) It has a different paint job. 3) There's one less button, the reset function has been removed, which I rarely used on my old pedometer. 4) The real improvement is that while the HJ-112 stored your KCal burned, total steps, aerobic steps, and total miles for 7 days it did not save your aerobic minutes. They were only visible for the current day. The HJ-113 stores aerobic minutes as well as all the others for 7 days. This was a great improvement for me. I like to log my aerobic distance as well as time. It helps me to calculate walking speed, a component of my program I'm trying to improve. 5) They've also included a fat gram burned on the KCal display. Frankly it's just the KCal divided by 9. I doesn't add anything for me, but it might help motivate someone else.

So overall I think this model is fantastic; it offers all the benefits of the HJ-112 (I find it's every bit as accurate, etc) and it has a few added benefits of its own. Namely: it's slightly smaller, it stores your aerobic times as well as distance for 7 days, it calculates fat grams burned, and it's cheaper! FYI: mine came with battery, so that's not how they're trying to save $. I got mine via Amazon/J&R and even with the nominal amount of shipping ($2) it was still less expensive than the HJ-112. I heartily recommend it, it's a great motivational tool. Also contrary to info in other reviews this is not a European model; all the distances are in miles, weight input is in lbs, stride is in inches, ect.

I've spent plenty of money on pedometers that never seemed to work for me. The clips would break, the number of steps were never accurate, they'd fall off... never to be seen again. Until I found this one. This current model has a really COOL color scheme, but the underlying product is PHENOMINAL. For those reviews that say they "lost" their pedometer due to a falty clip, the only thing I can say there is they must not have engaged the safety strap that I clip to my belt loop to avoid such a situation. Of course, as a male, I wear pants with a belt loop, and so this has never been a problem. This current product is an upgrade from my previous one, which lasted nearly 4 years before the unit itself stopped working properly. An upgrade on this version from the previous one is the "reset" button is no longer on the front and accidental resets (a small problem previously) no longer occur.

Options I love: 7 day memory, auto reset at midnight, EXTREMELY accurate counting of steps.

My only "negative" comment about the product is the inaccurate counts I get when I wear the thing on long runs. Depending on where I put it, it can be off a bit, and I'm not annoyed enough by that to give it a negative star rating. That's what I get for taking the thing to the edge of it's capabilities. If you want the most accurate step counter on the market, you can't beat this product at the price it's offered. You could spend a lot more for a product as accurate, but why?

I just got this watch, so maybe my opinion will change, but at the moment I'm disappointed. Setup was straightforward, and step counting seems accurate when running, but steps are not counted at all when walking. I adjusted the sensitivity to the highest level, and it still does not register a step when I am walking unless I'm wildly flailing my arms. I had hoped this watch would help me get a sense of the number of steps I walk in a typical workday, and I now realize that will not be possible.

That being said, if you're a runner, this is probably a good purchase. It's less ugly than most athletic watches anyway!

I love this watch! It is very nice and user friendly. I was able to set it up in no time and use it to accurately track my running pathways. It was an added bonus that you can set it up in regular time or military time. This is extremely handy for me since I am a night shift nurse so it doubles as a great watch for work. Would buy this over again if I had the choice!!!

Great on accuracy (as long as it is level -- like most pedometers). Only 3 stars, though, because the belt clip is not a full belt clip but a mere spring clip. Mine came off twice. It would have probably come off more than that except for the fact that I have not recovered it yet.

For only a few dollars, it is well worth it; HOWEVER, be wary of your delivery charges. I was charged from Amazon's third-party seller almost twice the cost of the pedometer for delivery. (It required no more than a small padded envelope and was sent via regular US mail.)

After having little success using a $250 Timex Bodylink GPS watch (see review) in Manhattan, I decided to try this $15 pedometer. At first I was quite skeptical. However my tests showed the Sportline 340 Pedometer having astounding repeatability (better than 1%) and accuracy.

Most pedometers, including this one, are very basic instruments. Inside the device, there is a balanced weight that is very sensitive to vertical motion. When clipped to your belt, it increments the counter as you step driven by the translation of one side of your waist.

In order to test and calibrate the Sportline 340 Pedometer, I walked a very straight stretch of six Manhattan blocks. In the first group of tests, there were few sidewalk obstacles and minimal pedestrian traffic that impeded my movements. In order to be moderately scientific, I was certain to start and stop on the proper side of the street so the distance included exactly six stretches of cross street and six stretches of sidewalk.

After four trips of walking the same path, my step counter showed an amazingly small range of 588 to 594 steps. When one considers the variables imposed, such as not always being able to walk completely straight, the results are even more impressive. As you can see from the data below, the accuracy was quite amazing. The difference from the mean never exceeded 1%. Given the simplicity of the pedometer, I didn't expect this level of repeatability. Moreover, I didn't expect my stride length to be so uniform.

My hypothesis was that the exceptional accuracy may have been fostered, in part, by the shoes I was wearing. The Kenneth Cole Building Block shoes (see review) have very heavy soles and large heals. These may insure that the impact is harsh enough to always trigger the movement of the weight.

On a second grouping of tests, I walked precisely the same path wearing my New Balance 620 cross trainers (see review). The conditions were not the same as the first group due to far more pedestrian traffic and other obstacles, which made it very difficult to walk in a straight line. In fact, one test had to be scrapped as I was nearly run over by a taxi. As you can see below, the second group produced a step count about 2% greater than the first group. Yet this was probably due to the unavoidable path changes.

Considering that the pedometer is only calibrated in whole inches, the accuracy truly limited by the precision of the calibration settings. This means there is no difference in the two calibrations as both stride lengths would round to 32 inches.

For the price, the Sportline 340 pedometer is an excellent piece of fitness equipment. If you enjoy low-impact exercise by walking, consider this device as an excellent tool for tracking your efforts.

I really like this little pedometer. I've had so many pedometers you would think I collect them (hmmmm...maybe I do now!) This one is easy to set. It has a removable beltclip that is easy to install and holds comfortably on my waistband. With other pedometers I've had problems with them popping off if I bend over or sit down. This one is small so doesn't get that same upwards pressure on it when I move that way. It is easy to slip in a front pants pocket and small enough to work well in a shirt pocket as well (although I haven't used it that way). I haven't tried it in my purse, but I suspect it would work that way as well since it handles being carried in my pocket just fine and I've also tried carrying it in my hand to test the accuracy there. I think I've bought my last pedometer...I love this one. I really like being able to see just how many steps I've taken and that it encourages me to keep moving toward my 10,000 steps a day. And, it's small and light enough that I often forget I'm even wearing it!

This pocket pedometer is smooth & slim and easily fits in a pocket for use. The leash has a good clasp and using it makes me comfortable that the pedometer isn't going to slip out of my pocket. It also has an adjustable clip, to use on a waist band or belt.

Tracks moderate pace walking in addition to the overall steps for the day. I never need to reset it, unless I want to track the overall total for a specified event (the TRIP function). It doesn't lose the data for the week, and the counter starts fresh after midnight each day.

I have both the omron 720it (computer downloadable) and hj 112...both are extremely accurate and easy to use...this revision of the pedometer concept is terrific...small but large numbers...easy to set and use...it really does work in any position...the display blanks out to save power so it is inconvenient to constantly be looking at it...still not much of a problem...i checked it against my other omrons and it's within 0.7%...it keeps better track of aerobic activity than the others (they only record after 10 min of activity...the hj 303 after 4 seconds)...overall, the size (small) and accuracy and ease of use make this pedometer an outstanding device for walking or running.

What an impressive little device this is. The device is highly accurate on the waistband. The purse option hasn't really worked too well for us, but it does come close. The coolest part of this thing is the ability to download the information to your PC and track your progress and goals. When we first got it, we thought 10,000 steps was a breeze. We were way WRONG! 10,000 steps is a lot of walking. I mean a lot. We were coming up more than half short of the recommended 10,000 and didn't even realize it.

It's very sleek in it's design. The overall look is that of an egg cut in half. It does not have a proprietary USB link, if you have a device with a smaller USB end rather than the standard (MP3 players and GPS devices sometimes use the smaller one) you can use an existing one, just in case you lose the one that is supplied.

It's really sweet that it resets itself at midnight every day and stores your previous data for you to download at your convenience.

Love it.

I have not used pedometers much, but really like this unit for a number of reasons. First, it is quite compact and can comfortably fit in a pocket and not feel bulky (you can wear with a clip too or hang it from a cord off a belt). Second, it really seems to accurately count steps. I tried it a few times by counting 50 or 100 steps with the unit in my pocket and it seems to be right on target as a step counter. To measure distance, I walked a 100 feet a couple of times to set my stride. With the stride in place, the distance measure seems pretty accurate. I walked a known distance (about a mile and a half) and then looked at both the step count and distance. The distance was a little short, which meant I needed to make a slight adjustment to the value of the stride. I made the same walk again and got the calculated distance was exactly on target.

Conclusion: This is an accurate pedometer in terms of counting steps and estimating distance.

I also really like the software. You simply attach the pedometer to your computer (I have a a PC with XP) and the data then download. You can look at your total number of steps by day (or hour within the day), the number of steps at an aerobic rate (defined as part of walking ten minutes or more at a stretch), and distance walked. There are also estimates of calories burned and grams of fat lost, based on you weight and age -- I have no idea if these are accurate. As a nice feature, you can look at all statistics by day, week, or month.

The software is very easy to use and as bonus also interfaces with some of Omron's blood pressure unit.

I have really enjoyed using this pedometer in that I can slip it into my pocket in the morning (and am glad it doesn't take up much room) and then look at my step count for the day. I have given myself a daily target (10000 steps) and am now finding myself doing more things to get in extra steps each day -- parking further from my destination, walking a bit further to pick up for lunch, or just treating myself to a 10-15 minute walk during my workday. These things add up and now I have a sense of what all I need to do during the day to reach my step goal.

You pay a bit extra (not that much) for a pedometer with many features, including the software. I suppose you could save a few dollars by not getting a version with the software, but for me, being able to easily track progress is one of the best things about this pedometer (can also print out reports, output data to a spreadsheet if you want). It seems to be worth a bit more to have this sort of tracking (though I do wish they had sotware for Macintosh computers!).

Highly recommended!
