The New England Journal of Medicine stated that, “The American healthcare system is at once the most expensive and the most inadequate system in the developed world.” It’s true, we spend more money on healthcare than any other nation, yet according to the WHO, we average #23 for life expectancy, #15 for overall achievement, and #72 for performance on the level of health (how well the healthcare system improve’s a citizen’s health).
And it’s not for a lack of technology or medication. A Kaiser Family Foundation study showed that in 2003, 3.1 BILLION prescriptions were filled that year, which equals 11 prescriptions for every man, woman, and child in the US. But childhood obesity, diabetes, depression, autism (CDC says 1 out of 166 children has autism)and other diseases are on the RISE, and America has the highest percentage of people suffering from mental disorders. Heart disease and cancer are running rampant. Our healthcare system is not working. How can we fix it?
. . . It’s really not about a “lack” of resources. Our healthcare system kills about 800,000 people annually (www.lef.org), making it the number one killer in the US, surpassing even heart disease and cancer. I’m not saying that the medical system doesn’t save lives, b/c emergency care in the US is amazing, but in general our health as a nation is terrible.
What is the cause of Type 2 diabetes?
Filed Under Diabetes | 2 Comments
My ***** research team, the Google, has brought me back some conflicting data.
My grandmother, and ex-nurse, claims the cause is sugar intake.
My school issue Health textbook blames obesity.
I’m not sure who to believe, so I’ve decided that people I don’t know, and have no way of trusting, will divulge the answer to me.
Is there anyone that does know what the cause is?

How has increased computer processing speed and the Internet contributed to recent medical breakthroughs?
Filed Under Diabetes | 2 Comments
Hi…I’m helping an author write a book. He needs some specific examples of recent medical breakthroughs (say in the last 10 years or so), new drugs, or innovations made possible by the increased processing speed of computers and/or the ability to communicate quickly over long distances via technologies such as the Internet. Suggestions can be in any aspect of medicine, but we are especially interested in cancer, heart disease, diabetes, or obesity.
The more specific details or links you can provide the better, since we will have to source our references in the book.
Thanks to everyone who contributes.
Is it sad that this generation’s life expectancy is predicted to be shorter because of obesity and diabetes?

Is It True That The Main Cause of Diabetes Is Eating Too Much Sugar?
Filed Under Diabetes | 3 Comments
I know that it can be hereditary and that it’s more common for people who suffer with obesity have a higher risk of it, but if you eat a lot of sugar, are you at risk for it too? Just curious!
The food they surve is junk, but kids could take a lunch like a whole wheat sandwich made with low fat meat and piece of fruit or there are 100 calorie snack packs of all kinds of chips and cookies and instead of soda take juice, tea or water. So why do kids still eat the junk food they do at school? Why don’t parents take a stand against rise of childhood diabetes and obesity ?

… doctors say is bad for people?
Isn’t that similar to a person who jumps off a 10 foot ladder for blaming someone else for not being there to catch them?
Is it easier to vote for Obama than to follow doctors orders and to weigh no more than our parents did 20 years ago?

Kroll,
that’s it. Blame the restaurants while many of your neighbors are NOT obese because they know how to control themselves.
A good website to find peer-reviewed articles?

I’m writing a paper on obesity/diabetes as a disease of civilization. I’m trying to find something about psychosocial stress and urbanization. Any idea where I can find articles on that?
With diabetes and obesity reaching epidemic levels in America, do we really need fried Coca-Cola?
Filed Under Diabetes | 10 Comments
Abel Gonzales, 36, a computer analyst from Dallas, tried about 15 different varieties before coming up with his perfect recipe — a batter mix made with Coca-Cola syrup, a drizzle of strawberry syrup, and some strawberries.
Balls of the batter are then deep-fried, ending up like ping-pong ball sized doughnuts which are then served in a cup, topped with Coca-Cola syrup, whipped cream, cinnamon sugar and a cherry on the top.
Is there any studies on how much soda pop contributes to diabetes and obesity in America?
Filed Under Diabetes | 3 Comments
Seems that soda pop a the common factor in both.
The medical industry is quick to rely on what they have been told in/re cause of diabetes. There is no empirical evidence to draw on. So does obesity cause diabetes or is it just an early manifestation of it? Is there a yet to be discovered agent of transmission that makes diabetes communicable?
No trite answers please. If obesity is an early manifestation of the disease, you would not expect diagnosis to have been made when the symptom comes to the fore. Cite the data not the traditional cant please, no progress in that.
