Tips for winning at weight loss

September 29, 2008 · Filed Under Exercise, Main Content, Weightloss · Comment

Trainer Bob Harper is getting contestants into shape through a program of diet and exercise on the new season of NBC’s “The Biggest Loser.”

Harper has extended that guidance to the masses with his new book “Are You Ready! Take Charge, Lose Weight, Get in Shape, and Change Your Life Forever” (Broadway Books). In it, he combines a mind-body approach to fitness that exercise newbies might find helpful.

Establish a routine: It’s important to actually schedule your exercise time, Harper says, especially if you’ve never worked out before. “That, to me, is the biggest thing,” he says.

Start with cardio: Buy yourself a pair of sneakers and just go for a walk before work or at lunch. “People ask me, ‘What do I need to do, Bob? Do I need to get a gym membership? A trainer?’ ” Harper says. “No, just relax and get started.”

Work up to the weights: If you’re exercising for the first time, wait about two months and then add in weight training, Harper says. “Fat and muscle don’t like living together,” he says. “The more muscle there is, the more fat burning there is. When you start weight training, don’t think that you’re going to start getting all muscle-y. You’re just going to start burning fat off.” Some trainers suggest using heavy weights and limited repetitions, others prefer lighter weights and increased repetitions. Harper combines the two approaches. “I like heavier weights and lots of reps,” he says. “Combine those two and it works really well.”

Don’t forget the diet: “Try to get off sugar immediately, because of all the empty calories,” Harper says. And consider cutting portions in half. “When you cut everything in half, you will absolutely lose weight,” he says.

Misconceptions about Weight Loss

September 28, 2008 · Filed Under Exercise, Main Content, Weightloss · Comment

We’ve all heard the saying, “You can fool some of the people all of the time and you can fool all of the people some of the time, but you can’t fool all of the people all of the time.” When it comes to weight loss, it seems that most of us have been fooled most of the time. Talk to your colleagues and friends and you’ll find a lot of frustrated people struggling to find the elusive secret of losing weight.

It’s important to realize that the secret to success is: KNOWLEDGE! Weight loss is a science, easily conquered if you have the correct information.

Misconceptions about fat loss abound. Here are a few of the prevalent ones.

“Overweight people eat too much.” In my thousands of consultations with clients over the last 30 years, the vast majority have told me they eat only one or two meager meals per day. The result: weight gain, because their metabolism has slowed down.

“I inherited a fat body.” Sadly, we live in a society where it is easier to blame someone else than take responsibility for our lives. One of the easiest places to lay blame is at the feet of our parents. However, science has shown that our fitness is only about 35 percent genetic. Sixty-five percent is our daily habits. This means you can recondition your mind to learn healthy habits and compensate for your genes. While there is a small portion of our population with metabolic issues related to their genetic make-up (only about 1 percent of us), most obesity is caused by learned compulsive behaviors, poor eating habits and sedentary lifestyles.

“All I need is a diet pill.” Nearly all slimming aids are bogus. The only thing they lighten is your wallet! Most contain a disclaimer: “For best results use in conjunction with a regular exercise program and a reduced calorie diet.” This is an age-old marketing technique: Sell a pill with a promising outcome, but in the fine print, admit that to achieve desired results, the consumer must modify his or her behavior. Any thinking person would ask themselves, “If the regimen works, do I really need the pills?”

“Cardio is the way to go.” According to a University of Southern Maine study, a half-hour of weight training will burn as many calories as running at a six-minute-per-mile pace for the same duration.

Pumping iron has two other benefits cardio does not afford. It helps build muscle, which in turn burns more calories. It also boosts metabolism for as long as 39 hours, during the recovery and rebuilding period.

Paige M asked:

My aunt’s mother has CHF and is on a water restriction, low sodium, low fat, cumidin diet. So, her diet is fairly limited. Unfortunately, she has always loved to eat and now that she has been told that soup, fruit and anything that contains liquid is out, she is getting very depressed and doesn’t want to eat at all. Does anyone have any suggestions for foods we can try?

Detecting Fad Diets 101

September 24, 2008 · Filed Under Diet plans, Main Content · Comment

The Appeal of Fad Diets

Fad diets are easy for just about anyone to fall for. When you first decide to lose weight, it can be tempting to do something drastic. You feel like you just can’t spend one more day overweight. This mind-frame sets you up for falling for the empty promises of scams. Here are some pointers for identifying and avoiding fad diets.

A Sure-Fire Sign of a Fad Diet
The most common sign that a diet is a fad diet is that it promises quick weight loss. Fad diets make unrealistic promises, such as, “Lose 30 pounds in 30 days!”. Diets that lead to rapid weight loss (more than about two pounds a week) are not nutritionally sound and are almost always too restrictive to be adhered to for any considerable period of time.

Fad Diets Bring Results… Temporary Ones

The weight you lose when you start a fad diet is comprised mainly of body fluids, or water weight. The catch is that this weight usually comes back — with a few extra pounds added, too. Losing so much weight, so soon, gives dieters a sense of accomplishment, but when the weight inevitably returns, the cycle starts all over again.

The temporary results can often lead to frustration, depression and a sense of failure. The sad part is, people often follow fad diets because of these very same feelings, so they get caught up in a cycle of constantly going on and off unsound diets. In the end, they feel worse, and sometimes, weigh more than they did in the first place.

Typical Signs of a Fad Diet

Here are some more clues that you’re considering a fad diet:

* Fad diets are typically very low calorie, which is unhealthy and can even be dangerous. Most people can lose a substantial amount of weight on a diet of around 1,500 calories a day, which allows for at least three 300-400 calorie meals and two 100-200 calorie snacks. If a diet requires you to eat fewer than 1,200 calories a day, if you are a woman, or fewer than 1,400 calories a day if you are a man, it is not nutritionally sound.

* Fad diets usually require sudden, drastic changes, such as completely eliminating an entire food group or cutting your caloric intake by too many calories. Making such rapid changes does not prepare you for returning to normal eating or teach you how to make important lifestyle changes such as portion control or making better food choices, skills which are crucial for long-term weight management.

* Fad diets are often low on vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, which means they are short on the foods that provide many important nutritional needs, resulting in malnutrition and poor health. Depending on the type of diet plan, it may be deficient in protein, carbohydrates, fiber, or important vitamins and minerals, or they may provide too much protein. Fad diets do not provide guidelines for a healthy, long-term eating plan.

Low Carb Diet Plans

September 23, 2008 · Filed Under Diet plans, Main Content · Comment

I’m sure you have heard of them, low carb diet plans. This type of diet is very popular now, because people who are trying to lose weight have discovered how effective low carb diet plans really are.

Many of us love carbs, and it really is hard to lose weight and keep it off without restricting carbs in the diet. There are many low carb diet plans to choose from, and the only way to decide which one is right for you, is to compare each of them side by side to see which one you can live with.

There are various websites that have a ton of information available for dieters, that compare low carb diet plans and specific information on each one. A good site to visit is www.lowcarb.ca/atkins-diet-and-low-carb-plans/ which has personal testimonials as well as support and recipes for the low carb dieter.

There are good carbs and bad carbs just like anything else. Bad carbs include breads, baked goods, cereals, pastas, white potatoes, white rice, certain candies, and most alcoholic beverages. Good carbs are those that are high in fiber and low in carb count, such as, sweet potatoes, brown and wild rice, whole grain breads and pastas, fresh fruits and vegetables, and red or white wine.

Each low carb diet plan is somewhat the same, except they are each unique regarding how much of what you get to eat when. Many low carb diet plans start out with a beginning phase that is more restrictive, especially for the first two weeks, and more foods are slowly added back in as the diet progresses.

Each of these low carb diet plans restricts amount of carbohydrate intake to a degree, some more than others, and fiber offsets the carb count of each food item. The higher the fiber, the lower the carb count.

The Atkins diet is focused on eating meats, protein, and good fats, and does not include any fruits or vegetables in the beginning, which may not be tolerable for some people. This diet also only allows twenty carbs or less per day, and heavily encourages the use of dietary supplements.

The South Beach Diet is somewhat easier to stick to because it allows a greater variety of foods in the first phase, including vegetables and lean meats, and does not restrict the carb count as much as Atkins.

The Zone is another popular low carb diet plan that incorporates some of the same principles of the Atkins and South Beach Diets, but  the emphasis is on keeping the ratio of daily intake at 40% carbs, 30% protein, and 30% fat. Meals are divided into ‘blocks’ and basically the same foods are eaten throughout the diet, the only difference being, that more fat is added after goal weight is obtained to keep the dieter from continuing to lose more weight.

Whichever low carb diet plan you chose will be effective, that is a given, because carbs are what affect the insulin levels in our bodies and cause cravings. Once we have learned to eat in a healthy way, and only eat the good carbs, we will weight less and be able to keep the weight off. Be sure to consult your physician if you need to lose a considerable amount of weight, so that he or she can recommend the low carb diet plan that is right for you.
