Highly recommend it., October 17, 2011

This review is from: Stamina Power Tower with Adjustable Bench (Sports)

Summary

Pros:

* Very sturdy and well built;

* Many different exercises;

* The adjustable bench is useful for sit-ups and dumbbells. It is also helpful for my kids to access the pull-up bar.

Cons:

* The push-up handles really should be on the vertical knee raise side so that we do not have to move the bench every time when we want to do push-ups.

* The assembly process was made unnecessarily tedious by putting all the bolts/nuts in one big plastic bag – it would be much easier if the manufacturer separates the five different bolts/nuts into labeled plastic bags, a common practice most manufacturers do. Of course this is only a one time problem when you put it together.

Overall I am extremely happy with the item. I think this will take over the Stamina 50-1690 as the top seller in the category within the next few years, especially if the manufacturer “fixes” the two problems above.

Background

I read through the comments of most of the popular power towers (stand-alone pull-up bars) at Amazon and then decided on this one because of its multi-functionality. I’m a reasonably handy person and have assembled quite some home furniture/equipment (but not handy enough to build my own house).

I usually buy stuff from Amazon. But I bought this item (for a slightly higher price) from a local store in case I wanted to return it if it was not what I had expected – it turns out I do not need that insurance policy after all.

Detailed Comments

The PDF version of the manual is available from the manufacturer web page:

[...]

I encourage you to give it a quick read before your purchase. This will give you a rough idea what to expect.

Stamina 50-1750 is essentially 50-1700 plus the adjustable bench.

The height is about 85 inches. If you have low ceiling, make sure you measure your room. Ideally you want to have at least one head room above the pull-up bar (since your head will stick out above the pull-up bar). This tower takes up more space than Stamina 50-1690. If you live in a small apartment, you may want to buy something smaller.

The adjustable bench is useful to do sit-ups or dumbbells. My kids also use the bench to access the pull-up bar. It wobbles a little when doing sit-ups quickly. I suppose that is not unexpected since the bench is adjustable (so it cannot be completely tied down).

It is solidly built and heavy (a good thing for sturdiness). There are many exercises you can do with it.

In this model you have to move the bench to do push-ups, a major pain. The manufacturer should add two push-up handles on the vertical knee raise side so we do not have to fold the bench every time when we do push-ups. My guess is that this design was inherited from Model 50-1700, in which there is no bench. Adding push-up handles on the VKR side would also give users more head room when doing push-ups so that we do not feel like the our heads will hit the foam support bar because there is a longer distance on the VKR side.

It took me about two or three hours to put it together all by myself (much of the time was wasted on figuring out which bolt was the right one – more on this later). If you have a second person to help you with the extend arms for about five or ten minutes, it helps a lot. But at the time I was by myself and didn’t want to wait.

The assembly process was made unnecessarily tedious by putting all the bolts/nuts in one big plastic bag – it would be much easier if the manufacturer separates the five different bolts/nuts into labeled plastic bags, a common practice most manufacturers do. I constantly had to compare different bolts/nuts to make sure I used the corrrect ones – we shouldn’t have to do that.

Built with solid matel. Good quality overall. Assembly instructions and illustrations are not easy to follow. Be careful when assembling same diameters of screws with different lengths. It is very easy to use the shorter ones when in fact the longer ones are needed. You can put it together in about 2-3 hours by yourself. Have a helper could make the assebly quicker.

Sturdy and Easy to Assemble, December 15, 2009
By

Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Weider Club 290 Power Tower (Sports)

My journey to purchasing the Weider Power Club 290 started with a simple search for a pull up bar. After reading numerous reviews of pull up bars, it seemed there were a lot of variables that made a simple pull up bar difficult to select. They were either not sturdy, or didn’t fit certain doorways, or would damage the door’s trim paint, etc.

In that research I learned about the Weider Power Club 290 and several other VKR-type equipment that had pull-up bars. The Weider is more expensive than others, but reviews constantly gave it accolades for being sturdy and easy to assemble. Having limited space, minimum foot print was also important. Compared to lower priced brands, this model takes up the least amount of floor space. I also liked the fact that in addition to pull-ups and chin-ups, I could add vertical knee raises and dips to my routine. Pull-ups, chin-ups, VKR, and dips are all some of the best compound movements that can be done to gain strength, so it was easy to convince myself to spend the extra money.

After receiving this equipment last week, I agree with the reviews I’d read. It is easy to assemble with excellent instructions so long as you spend a few seconds studying each picture (in addition to reading the instructions). It is sturdy (minimal flex…I’m 175 lbs), looks nice, and gives a great workout. Those unsure about whether you can do a pull-up or chin-up may want to look into the Weider Power Club 390, which offers an assist feature to reduce the weight you have to pull up.

My tips for assembly would be (as mentioned above) to study each picture for a few seconds paying attention to when washers are used, etc. I mistakenly assumed washers were used on a couple of steps when they weren’t. I didn’t discover this until a later step when I ran out of washers but still needed 4. I was able to assemble this unit entirely by myself, though the step of adding the arm rests was a bit awkward – a second set of hands would have been helpful. The only tools used were a ratchet wrench set, phillips screwdriver, and rubber mallet. Adjustable wrenches would work in place of the ratchet wrenches, but you need to use two.

In summary, I am very happy with this purchase. The equipment looks nice, takes up minimal floor space (for VKR equipment), is sturdy, and provides a great workout compliment to my existing equipment.

Update July 2010: I’ve been using this equipment for 7 months now, and I am still happy with it. One drawback that another reviewer mentioned (and I agree with) is the lack of a real close-grip pull-up. You can do shoulder-width, wide-grip, and the ‘inside’ narrow grip, which is still a pretty good variety. Still a 5-star in my opinion though, as I’d much prefer the added ability to do full body weight dips and VKR’s (not to mention the extra confidence in the stability) as compared to a cheap doorway pull-up bar.

Weider 290 Power Tower, February 23, 2010

This review is from: Weider Club 290 Power Tower (Sports)

I was in the market for a stable, substantial Power Tower to be used primarily for pull-ups and VKR’s. This product fits that description with a few notable flaws. For an easy assembly process, be sure to have a socket set handy (even though it’s not listed as needed) and a few extra washers.

Pros-

Easy to assemble- took 1 person about 1 hour with a good socket set

Stable & Substantial- easily supports larger users

Small footprint relative to other Power Towers

Cons-

Arrived with numerous scratches

Foam hand grips for VKR station impossible to install (they are still off)

Many of the washers were stuck together and could not be separated without breaking them

Overall, I am happy with the purchase.

Poor angle, January 23, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Weider Club 290 Power Tower (Sports)

Unfortunately there is a slight angle to this tower so my knees kept hitting on the way up. Facing the opposite direction helped but it felt less comfortable. The angle is the main reason I am giving this a low score. It’s hard to see the angle from the picture however once I did my first pullup I was pretty disappointed.

Also I really like doing close-grip pullups, which I wasn’t able to do using this tower. I thought the inside pullup grip would suffice, however its spread too far to get the effect I was looking for.

It did seem to be relatively solid, it just wasn’t as functional as I thought it would be.

I took it down and got one of those over the doorway pullup bars instead.

This Treadmill is great. We love it!, July 28, 2009
By

This review is from: Spirit Esprit ET-8 Folding Treadmill (Sports)

One day I found out that my husband had inadvertently broken my old Weslo treadmill. Great. He actually “ran” on it. Now what was I supposed to hang my clothes on? After decided to replace it, we visited three local stores: Sports Chalet, Sports Authority and Sears. It’s important to physically try out a treadmill before you buy it, and this Esprit ET-8 treadmill was the ONLY one that stood out to me in our price range. It’s super quiet, has great cushioning, and can handle my intense strolling as I sip cocktails while watching horror movies. My husband uses it more vigorously, as nature intended. It has fit programs, nice incline, large deck, heart rate monitor, red LCD, magazine rack, and a fancy way of lowering itself (not unlike an electric convertible top). Did I mention how quiet it is? And how cushiony? I honestly think that it’s nicer than the bulkier treadmills at the gym, which can tend to be occupied or out of service. By going through Sports Chalet, we were able to pick it up for under 00 (including tax) on sale. (I recommend getting as much extended warranty as you can afford). It was delivered and set up the next day in half an hour. Note: You’ll need the space to accommodate it. It’s no space saver, by any means. Folded, it sticks out from the wall about 34″. This is a heavy duty treadmill that won’t need to be upgraded. We’re really happy with it.

This review is from: Spirit Esprit ET-8 Folding Treadmill (Sports)

I have put together numerous pieces of furniture and other products, plus have even built a computer, but this treadmill was the highest priced. That is why I am still shocked that the manual included with this piece of equipment was so sub par. All the other manuals I have used to assemble the other items were so much better detailed. For instance, to fold the machine the manual doesn’t even inform you there is a small plastic lever you must depress. If you follow their instructions, you will be left holding the treadmill – quite literally, and it’s heavy – and nothing will happen.

I was quite annoyed at this and emailed the company with several questions. They didn’t even respond! It has been three weeks and I’m still waiting! I cannot believe any company would just ignore a customer who has bought a big ticket item like this! I almost returned it, but that would of been a huge hassle. I guess they know that. Eventually, I was able to figure out the assembly and operation with little help from the manual.

It seems to be working well, save for the pulse monitor which often shuts off for no reason. I only hope their machine works far better than their customer service!

Look before you leap into the delivery!, December 10, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
This review is from: Spirit Esprit ET-8 Folding Treadmill (Sports)

Based on the other review, I eagerly jumped into ordering this treadmill. It hasn’t yet arrived, so my 2-star rating only reflects the delivery issues and not the quality of the actual product (sorry). I did want to give other customers a heads up on the delivery process, as the other customer review is a bit misleading in stating that it took only about “30 minutes” to get the treadmill set up. That may well be true for that customer because she may have had a crew of people available on the spot to help her set it up. This treadmill weighs close to 300 pounds and after calling Amazon’s Customer Service just now to inquire about the details and whether it really is that easy to assemble, I learned that the only delivery service they provide is “threshold delivery”. This means that, through Amazon, the treadmill will be delivered to your door and that’s it. Amazon apparently does not offer additional delivery and set-up services to get the treadmill off of your front porch and set up where you want it inside, even for an additional charge. Again, remember it weighs close to 300 pounds. What Amazon did do was to offer me the name of the shipper who will probably be delivering, and advise me to contact the shipper to ask them to carry the treadmill inside the house and set it up for me. I don’t know how much additional money this will cost, but it’s something I wish I’d considered before I went ahead to purchase this treadmill through Amazon.

Threshold delivery may well be very standard practice for treadmills and other heavy objects ordered through Amazon, but the one customer review that led me to quickly order this glossed over this fact and so I wanted to share this additional information to help other customers think and plan ahead.
