Pedometers work best "for people who walk faster and strike the ground harder," said David Bassett, a professor of health and exercise science at the University of Tennessee. "At 2 m.p.h., accuracy is about 85 percent, and at 1 m.p.h. it may be less than 50 percent. But all are very good at 3 m.p.h. or more."

Despite some of their quirks, pedometers offer exercise-impaired people a big advantage because they give instant feedback. They become tools for encouragement, motivation and confidence building. A pedometer makes it easy to mark progress toward a goal, say by adding 100 steps a day. And it's simple. "Steps are something people can intuitively understand," Bassett said.

Many models have a clock, some with alarms. One talks. Some have stopwatch functions and/or calculate speed. Some count the calories you're supposedly burning, but Bassett warns that calorie counters are even less accurate than distance measures. The calculation is based on the weight you enter.

Even on the exterior, pedometers require decisions. If you want to check your progress frequently, you'll want a caseless pedometer that positions the display so you can see it by merely glancing down at your waist. Pedometers with cases -- some of which are harder to open than others -- are more about style and the remote possibility that you might inadvertently bump the button that clears your step count. That wasn't a problem with any of the caseless pedometers here.
